Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to general, assembly and maintenance questions, you can find product-specific FAQs at the bottom of our product pages.

The support post that came with my Apex Mount is too tall, what should I do?

We include a 12" support post with the Apex Mount so that it's generally tall enough to work with sit-on-tops (SOT) kayaks that have a raised seat. Unfortunately, this can mean that for SOTs with a lower, molded seat, the support post is a little too high -- even at its lowest position.

To remedy the situation, you can simply cut the support post down in size so that it meets your height requirement. Or, you can contact us to swap the post out for a different length.

The support post I received with my systems is too tall or too short. What can I do?

We include a "standard" post length depending on what type of mount you purchase, and they are different for each one. Each post height was developed based on user testing for the "average" kayak configuration. However, if you find the post you receive is too tall or too short, we do have alternate post lengths available. This issue usually only occurs with the Apex, Custom or Twin Track Mounts, less so with the Hinged Mount.

My mount doesn’t fit my sit-inside cockpit or sit-on-top deck. What other options are available?

If your standard mount doesn’t fit your kayak as expected, you still have options. We offer a range of alternate hardware and mounting configurations designed to accommodate different cockpit sizes, deck layouts and obstructions.

In many cases, fit issues can be resolved with adjustments, such as:

  • Using shorter or longer mounting tracks

  • Adding gaskets or spacers to bridge gaps or uneven surfaces

  • Swapping in different-length support posts

  • Repositioning components to work around deck features or hardware

When those adjustments aren’t enough, we may also offer alternate and custom mount configurations that work well for sit-on-top kayaks, SUPs and non-standard setups. In addition, many of our customers have developed creative modifications or custom solutions when their kayaks don’t fit standard dimensions. You can see several real-world examples of these custom and modified setups in this blog post.

If you’re unsure which option might work best for your kayak, the easiest next step is to contact us directly and include a few photos of your cockpit or deck area—we’re happy to help you explore the available options.

Is it okay to drill holes into my kayak?

Yes...unless you have a specialty kayak of some sort. Most sit-in and sit-on-top kayaks already have dozens of pre-drilled holes in them to secure bungee cords, seats, camera holders and much more. Watch this super short video for an example.

Are the Versa or Gamut Systems hard to install or learn?

Most customers find setup straightforward using our installation instructions and videos. Like any adaptive equipment, Versa works best once properly fitted and paired with the right technique. We're here to provide you support and performance tips. Just ask!
