Will My Kayak Work with
Angle Oar Products?
A quick guide to kayak styles that tend to work well with our mounts.
General Fit Guidance by Kayak Type
If you’re planning to use one of our paddle support systems — the Versa Paddle System or the Gamut Paddle Holder System — you’ll also need a mount.
The mount is what connects the paddle system to your kayak, and the type of kayak you have plays a big role in determining which mount will work best. Kayaks vary widely in cockpit shape, deck layout, interior space and mounting surfaces, which means not every mount works with every kayak.
This page offers general guidance based on common kayak types and layouts, to help you understand whether your kayak is likely a good candidate and what characteristics matter most.
For detailed information about each mount — including how they attach, how stable they feel, and which kayaks they’re designed for — we recommend starting with our Mounts page.

Important Note
Angle Oar products are designed for recreational kayaking in calm, flatwater environments. They are not intended for whitewater, surf zones or high-performance paddling conditions.
Sit-Inside Recreational Kayaks
If you have the option, a sit-inside recreational kayak is generally the best, most stable foundation for Angle Oar systems. Even if it means picking up a used sit-inside rec kayak, this setup is recommended. Sit-inside kayaks with our Hinged Mount which attaches at three points around the cockpit coaming, creating a rigid, well-supported platform that distributes paddling forces evenly around the kayak. This design minimizes movement under load and provides a consistent, predictable feel while paddling.
These kayaks often pair with:
-
Hinged Mounts (Recommended)
-
Apex Mounts
What to Look For
-
A relatively flat plane between the front of the coaming and the back of the cockpit
-
A mostly flat coaming/edging around the cockpit
-
A mostly flat surface at the very front of the cockpit coaming/deck
A sufficiently open cockpit
A mostly flat or gently contoured floor (Apex Mount only)
Sit-on-Top (SOT) Kayaks
Many sit-on-top kayaks can work well with Angle Oar systems, but compatibility depends more on deck layout than category.
These kayaks often pair with:
-
Apex Mounts
-
Twin Track Mounts
-
Some custom mounting solutions
What to Look For
-
A flat deck or center console area directly in front of the seat, within arm's reach
-
May also work when there is a flat hatch cover directly in front of the seat, within arm's reach
-
Access to inside of kayak at attachment area (ideal, but not critical)
Touring & Sea Kayaks
Though not originally designed for touring and sea kayaks because of their smaller cockpits, Angle Oar developed the Apex Mount to be secured to the floor of these kayaks. Many sea kayakers use it with the Gamut Paddle Holder System to conserve energy on long paddles.
These kayaks often pair with:
-
Apex Mounts
-
Hinged Mounts (in select cases)
What to Look For
-
A smooth, most flat floor surface directly in front of the seat
-
Adequate space to position the mount comfortably
Kayak Categories Often Overlap
Many kayaks fit more than one category. When in doubt, focus on layout and mounting surfaces, not labels.
Fishing kayaks can be sit-on-tops or sit-insides
Tandem kayaks may be sit-inside or sit-on-top
Some vessels fall into entirely different categories (e.g., foldable, canoes, SUPs)

About Fit & Minor Adjustments
Not every kayak fits perfectly right out of the box, and that’s normal.

Common Adjustments Include
Adding spacers or fitter gaskets
Using a longer support post
Adjusting hardware placement
Swapping custom base mounts
We regularly help paddlers make these adjustments, often with minimal tools.
The goal isn’t perfection, it’s a setup that feels secure and comfortable for your kayak.
